Is It Possible To Conquer Phytophthora (Root Rot)?

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

By Kevin Cundick Phytophthora (Root Rot) can affect any plant or tree, especially fruit trees. It is a soil borne organism which infects the roots to the point where it kills the plant. Spores created by Phytophthora are drought resistant, but most active during wet, cool seasons often in the Spring or after harvest. How can Phythophthora be recognized? The leaves of the plant will begin to wilt and show a yellowing. Dried leaves will be retained. Young roots and occasionally larger roots will have a dark color. The infection damages roots so they cannot absorb water. What causes Phythophthora?Zoo spores cause the infection. These zoo spores like moist soil conditions which allow it to spread from plant to plant. When the infection feels its livelihood is threatened, it can produce to spore types that are capable of surviving in dead plant material for long lengths of time. The infection spreads quickest downhill. Are there factors which encourage the spread of the disease?Because the infection thrives in moist soil conditions, flooding and soil compaction help in the spread of the infection. Clay heavy soils can add to the difficulty of adequate drainage which can add to the spread of the infection. What can be done to treat Phytophthora?Phytophthora can be difficult to treat, but not impossible. Phytophthora is a fungus and so there is no cure for it, similar to treating a human fungus. First, be sure your plants have adequate drainage. Do not over water. Add organic soil. If you elect to use a chemical for treatment, it is best to treat the fungus before plants or trees are planted if possible. The use of some fungicides and adding in some organic matter, or mulch, to the soil along with good hygienic practices will reduce the activity of the organism. Skin Care: Effective Ingredients

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

By Michael Russell Modern skin care products contain various ingredients that are effective for many purposes, including cleansing, healing, soothing and firming. The following is a list of ingredients to look for in these products: ALLANTOIN is a chemical extracted from the comfrey root. It is an anti-irritant with healing and soothing properties that makes an excellent additive in face creams, masks and lotions. ALMOND OIL is a vegetable oil extracted from almond seeds. It stays fresher longer than many other similar nut oils and for this reason it is used in many skin care products. ALOE VERA is a natural moisturizer. It serves as a delivery system for other vitamins and nutrients in skin care products and can probably be considered an essential ingredient in almost all skin care products. ALPHA LIPOIC ACID is an anti-oxidant with a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. The fat soluble portion of alpha lipoic acid is of tremendous benefit to the skin. Substances that are water soluble do not penetrate the skin very well, but fat soluble molecules do penetrate. ASCORBIC ACID is a water soluble form of Vitamin C which promotes collagen production. Vitamin C also has anti-inflammatory properties and defends against free radicals in the skin created by sunlight, ozone and harsh chemicals. CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (MATRICARIA) EXTRACT is from chamomile which is one of the few herbs that has any value for the skin. A mild mixture of chamomile leaves produces an oily substance that is soothing to the skin. Matricaria is a derivative of chamomile that some experts believe hastens skin healing. DMAE is a nutritional substance that can be found in fish such as salmon. It is an anti-inflammatory, anti-aging topical agent that increases skin health, tone and radiance. A landmark study in which DMAE and alpha lipoic acid were combined in a topical solution showed marked resolution in scarring for patients with surgical scars when applied twice daily. It can also reduce the severity of atrophic (indented) acne scars. DMAE can also act as a penetration enhancer to increase the anti-inflammatory effects of alpha lipoic acid. Topical application of DMAE has a cumulative effect and can decrease the appearance of large pores over time. EVENING PRIMROSE OIL is a source of GLA (Gamma Linoleic Acid), an Omega-6 essential fatty acid which is a potent anti-inflammatory agent. GLYCERIN is a clear, syrupy liquid made by chemically combining water and fat. The water splits the fat into smaller components, glycerol and fatty acids. It improves the spreading quality of creams and lotions and prevents them from losing water through evaporation. GRAPESEED EXTRACT is important to skin care because it protects collagen from damage by free radicals, dampens inflammation and helps maintain the health and integrity of blood vessels. GREEN TEA EXTRACT helps protect the skin from damaging free radicals. It contains powerful anti-oxidants called polyphenols that are also excellent anti-inflammatories. HYALURONIC ACID is a substance found in human cells that helps hold moisture in the skin, as much as 300 times its own weight in water. This is an extremely effective ingredient that can also be quite costly. JOJOBA OIL is an expensive oil extracted from the jojoba seed that can provide a good film of moisture. KERATIN is the protein that is the primary constituent of the hair, nails and skin. OMEGA-3 & -6 OILS are essential fatty acids important to skin health. The Omega-3 essential fatty acids dramatically reduce the body’s production of inflammatory compounds. The active ingredients in Omega-6 oils are derived from linoleic acid. PANTHENOL is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. SQUALENE is a substance derived from shark lipid that contains large quantities of Vitamins A and D and has very good emollient properties. TRIETHANOLAMINE is an alkali that handles oil well by emulsifying it. UBIQUINONE preserves the anti-oxidant action of Vitamin C and protects cell membranes against oxidative damage. UREA is a natural substance that removes dead, dry skin cells. Urea both soothes dry skin and stimulates cell growth in the epidermis. It is a valuable additive in moisturizers. It is an aquaphilic compound that both attracts water and prevents its loss. It is the dry epidermis’ best friend. Acne-prone people should also use products containing urea as it seals in moisture without clogging pores. VITAMIN A is probably the most important vitamin involved in the appearance of the skin. It can pas through the skins’ layers and may exert an effect on the rate of keratinization of the skin. It is also an excellent ingredient in acne preparations, dry skin care and soothing creams for burns and irritated skin. Retinyl palmitate is a form of Vitamin A that some studies indicate turns into Retin-A (the acidic form of Vitamin A) in the skin. Retin-A appears to be one of the only products that when applied to the surface of the skin reduces lines and wrinkles and restores pink color to aging skin. VITAMIN D is absorbed through the skins’ outer layers. There is some evidence demonstrating that it exerts a healing effect on the skin when applied topically. It seems to work particularly well when combined with Vitamin A. VITAMIN E is a powerful anti-oxidant. This list in fairly comprehensive but by no means exhaustive. It is important to note that many of the above ingredients work well together and can have a synergistic effect when combined. How to Find Relationship Advice

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

By Kent Pinkerton One thing to keep in mind when seeking relationship advice is that the relationship advice business is exactly that a business, and a big business at that. It is important to be aware that there is a lot of bad advice available in the marketplace, a lot of poorly trained relationship counselors around, and a lot of poorly conceived and badly written books on the subject. So what do you do when you feel your relationship is starting to suffer? Where do you turn? The very first place to turn is to your friends and family members to see if they have had any experience in seeking out good relationship help. At the very worst, they may be able to steer you away from some counselor who didnt work or some books that didnt help. At the best, they may reveal to you that having been in the same position as you find yourself in currently, they found an answer or a therapist that worked for them and may also work for you. Word of mouth personal referrals are the absolute best way to find someone to help strengthen your relationship. Visit the therapist they recommended and talk with him or her. The initial consultation is usually free and youll know quickly whether or not this person has anything to say that might help you. Find some information about that couples relationship workshop they attended and see if looks or sounds like something you and your mate might want to try. Read that book, which by now is probably available for free at your local library and try to determine if it opens any windows into your situation. By spending some time where a friend directs you, you may not find the answers you seek but you will have started down a path of trying to heal things that just may lead you to the right destination. Outdoor Heaters — Pros, Cons, and Tips

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

By Anne Clarke Outdoor heaters are becoming more and more popular in residential settings. Once, generally found only in restaurant settings, outdoor heaters are now big hits in middle class neighborhoods, as well. Are you considering purchasing outdoor heaters for your own home? Before you do so, learn more about the pros and cons associated with outdoor heaters, as well as some tips. Compared to outdoor fire pits and chimneas, outdoor heaters release fewer emissions. Also, after sitting around an outdoor heater all night, neither you nor your guests will smell like a campfire! Also compared to outdoor fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, and chimneas, there are more ongoing costs associated with outdoor heaters. — If you have a gas outdoor heater, you must pay for refills of gas. — Electric heaters require the quartz to replaced about every 7 years (and your electricity bill will go up). — Also, there are more maintenance fees associated with both outdoor heaters and electric heaters. Although they are durable, it is still much easier to break a patio heater than an outdoor fireplace! Mushroom or umbrella outdoor heaters are most effective if there is no wind. A little bit of wind can make a big difference on how warm the area surrounding the heater is. Also, with gas heaters, wind can make flame move toward and damage internal components. To avoid problems with wind, it is best to set up your outdoor heater near walls, fences, and overhangs (making sure to still keep it at least 2 feet from walls and ceilings read the warning and instructions before setting up the heater.) Mushroom heaters are good because they reflect the heat down and out, where you want it to be. But moisture (especially salt air or chlorine air) can be hard on them. Buts can also be a problem, climbing into the burner orifices and the pilot light. Fingerprints can burn into the mushroom reflector surface. When not using your mushroom outdoor heater, be sure to store it away and/or place a heater cover over it. Mushroom/umbrella outdoor heaters put out more heat than directional outdoor heaters, but directional outdoor heaters can easily be mounted to many different surfaces, making them easy to set up and use. They are not affected by wind. They cost less, and bugs are not so much of a problem with them. An outdoor heater with wheels is much easier to move around than one without wheels! If you already have a natural gas line in your home, you may consider setting up a natural gas outdoor heater directly to it. Of course, if you do so, you will have fewer options as to which area of your patio you can heat up. When deciding what type of outdoor heater to get butane, propane, natural gas, etc. consider first where the closest suppliers are to you. Choose whatever type will be most convenient. You will find multiple uses for any outdoor heater you choose to buy: — Set one up outside so that smokers do not feel too shunned or cold when they must step outside for a smoke. — Make sure that outside barbecues and parties can last longer, with guests feeling comfortable. — Extend the length of seasons that you can use your porch start using your porch earlier in the spring and later in the fall. Be sure that cool summer evenings are heated as well. — Use your outdoor heater in the morning when you want to sit outside, breath in the fresh morning air, and drink your coffee. — Turn on your outdoor heater when you are completing outdoor projects you do not want to accidentally pound your hand with a hammer because your fingers were too numb to grip it properly!
